WATCH: The longaberger ironworks is turning the tables on Waukegan, making some of the finest wrought iron in the world.
The Longabergers has been in business since 1904.
In fact, it is the oldest ironworks still in operation in the country.
But that is changing.
With the city’s downtown being demolished, the company is turning to the community to help it start over.
In a village called Waukenberg, it has begun construction of a new factory.
“We have to turn this place into a world-class industrial facility, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” said CEO Michael Bienie.
The company is using its own equipment and materials.
It’s even taking on the riskiest parts of its business.
The Longabergs is also partnering with the University of Wisconsin to make the mill itself.
“There’s no place like this, and I don’t want to go anywhere without my employees and my community,” said Bienies partner, Tom Hildenbrand.
“We want to build a world class industrial facility.”
The Longabaggers is the largest and oldest ironmaking in the U.S. The company has been making wrought iron since the late 1800s.
It started in Wauleyburg and now it’s in Wausau.
It’s not the first company to turn to the village.
Bieniere is working with a community group in Wabash to make a steel mill, and he wants to make it in Wampum.
“I want to bring a lot of jobs to the area, and this is a great opportunity for Wampamp,” he said.
The Wauleys are an important part of the town, said Waukis Mayor Jim O’Brien.
“This town has been a good community for years and years, and it is a really big part of what we do.
I’m proud to be part of this.”
